An early September festival celebrating Boone's railroad history takes place the first weekend after Labor Day and is host to over 30,000 attendees. The festival offers concerts, arts and craft shows, a parade and much more.
Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad
Enjoy an elegant dinner as you ride through the beautiful Des Moines River Valley in a historic 50's era dining car once used by the Union Pacific Railroad. Or, take an excursion on the Fraser Train that operates daily from Memorial Day Weekend through October 31.
Cedar Pointe Golf Course
A beautiful 18 hole championship golf course in the heart of Boone. The front nine is lined with mature trees and favors the precision golfer while the back nine opens up and introduces several water hazards.
Boone History Museums
There are four museums featured by Boone History Museums. The Boone History Center takes a look at the history of Boone County while the recently restored Hickory Grove School focuses on education from the late 1800's up to the 1950's. The Kate Shelley Memorial Park and Railroad Museum honor a local heroine for her bravery during a horrible storm. The Birthplace of Mamie Doud Eisenhower, wife of the 34th president of the United States, Dwight Eisenhower displays family heirlooms and includes a library and exhibits.
Central Iowa Expo
Central Iowa Expo offers 116 gated acres with 70 additional acres for parking. The Expo is one of Iowa's largest flat, outdoor facilities. The Central Iowa Expo hosts the Farm Progress Show, the nation’s largest outdoor farm event, with nearly 600 exhibitors on display.
The Iowa Arboretum
The Iowa Arboretum is located in nearby Madrid. A 40-acre section of land was purchased by the Iowa State Horticultural Society to be used as an Arboretum to serve the state of Iowa in 1966. The Arboretum is home to over 4,000 accessioned woody and herbaceous plants and is one of the largest displays of plants that can grow in Iowa. The Arboretum also manages a 330-acre native woodland.
